World's fastest: IBM's Roadrunner supercomputer breaks petaflop barrier using Cell and Opteron processors
Roadrunner is a supercomputer built by IBM at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, USA. Currently the world's fastest computer, the US$133-million Roadrunner is designed for a peak performance of 1.7 petaflops, achieving 1.026 on May 25, 2008.
Roadrunner differs from many contemporary supercomputers in that it is a hybrid system, using two different processor architectures. Usually supercomputers only use one, since such a design is easier to design and program for. To realise the full potential of Roadrunner, all software will have to be written specially for this hybrid architecture. The hybrid design consists of dual-core Opteron server processors manufactured by AMD using the standard AMD64 architecture. Attached to each Opteron core is a Cell processor manufactured by IBM using Power Architecture technology. As a supercomputer, the Roadrunner is considered an Opteron cluster with Cell accelerators, as each node consists of a Cell attached to an Opteron core and the Opterons to each other.
Processors
Roadrunner is unique for its hybrid design using two different models of processors.
Opteron
AMD Opteron 2210, running at 1.8 GHz. These are processors with two general purpose cores each. Opterons are used both in the computational nodes feeding the Cells with useful data and in the system operations and communication nodes passing data between computing nodes and helping the operators running the system. Roadrunner has a total of 6912 Opteron processors (6480 computation, 432 operation), for a total of (12960+864) 13824 cores.
PowerXCell
IBM PowerXCell 8i, running at 3.2 GHz. These processors have one general purpose core (PPE), and eight special performance cores (SPE) for floating point operations. Roadrunner has a total of 12,960 PowerXCell processors, with 12,960 PPE cores and 103,680 SPE cores, for a total of 116,640 cores.

Even the 15-inch widescreen notebooks - often cited as a good compromise between portability and power - are really better suited to replacing a desktop computer for general office chores than they are for typing on the tray of a cramped airline seat.
Bottom line: if you want both power and portability, the line of notebooks with screens from 12 to 14 inches make the most sense today.
You can outfit these models with high-end processors, plenty of RAM, and fast hard drives, and you can still carry them around comfortably. Anything larger you should really only consider if you’ll primarily be using the notebooks at home or at school. If you’re primarily a road warrior, look to 12-inch models or netbooks.
Hard drive
Today’s notebook computers come with a wide variety of hard drive options - in part because hard drive technology is quickly moving toward the world of solid state (SSD). But most notebooks today are still shipped with traditional hard drives spinning at 5400 or 7200 revolutions per minute (rpm).
Since you’re probably buying with the future - and Windows 7 - in mind, avoid 5400-rpm drives. They’re simply too slow, and the price difference to a 7200-rpm drive is small.
SSD drives are clearly the future, however, and with good reason: they’re light, almost indestructible, use very little power, and most importantly, they’re blazingly fast. To give you an idea of just how fast, a typical Windows 7 installation may take a minute or more to boot up with a traditional hard drive, but only about 15 seconds with an SSD.
Processor
The processors in netbook computers - typically from the Intel Atom line - are much slower than desktop or even traditional notebook processors, in part because they’re designed with maximum battery life and portability in mind.
But most people are used to computers that are responsive, and the slowest Atoms are not. So look to netbook models with the faster N270, N280, or Z530 processors. The extra bump in speed will be appreciated and make you happy with your netbook for longer.
Memory
Don’t buy a notebook with less than 2 gigabytes (GB) of RAM unless you plan on upgrading the memory yourself after purchase. While Microsoft claims that any version of Windows will run on machines outfitted with only 1 GB of memory, none of its operating systems will run well with that amount.
Even today, though, having more memory means you can use more applications at the same time, which probably translates into greater productivity. So consider 2 GB to be a useful minimum amount of RAM for any new machine, and if you can afford it, 4 GB of RAM is better.
32-bit or 64-bit?
Increasingly, your choice in operating systems is boiling down to 32-bit versus 64-bit. Clearly the future is with 64-bit operating systems and software. And in fact, many notebook makers are offering the 64-bit version of Windows by default.
So is 64-bit the way to go? Not necessarily. The fact is that a significant number of applications have not yet been ported to the 64-bit version of Windows, so you could run into compatibility issues.
Check the software you rely upon to see whether it is compatible with 64-bit Windows. If not, opt for the 32-bit operating system. You can typically upgrade to the 64-bit version later at no charge.

Just as electronic circuits are made from transistors, diodes and other devices, so too are biological circuits. Synthetic biologists have worked together to create the Registry of Standard Biological Parts, and this new research has contributed more than 60 new components to the list.

Apple`s Snow Leopard or Microsoft`s Windows 7: Which Is Better for the Enterprise?
NEWS ANALYSIS: Apple showed off a big update to Snow Leopard at this week's World Wide Developers Conference. But was it enough to supplant Windows 7 as the ideal operating system in the enterprise?
Apple demoed the new version of its popular operating system, Mac OS X, June 8 at its World Wide Developers Conference. Dubbed Snow Leopard, the new operating system is an iterative update. The operating system's design is quite similar to that of current versions of the software. Ironically, Snow Leopard will only work with Intel-based Macs. Because of that, all legacy Macs containing Power PC chips will not be able to run Snow Leopard.
During the keynote, as Apple was introducing its new operating system, Bertrand Serlet, Apple's senior vice president of Software, took the stage to discuss the company's latest operating system. He immediately fired a shot at Microsoft. Instead of ignoring Windows 7 and focusing the audience's attention on Mac OS X, Serlet said "Windows 7 is just another version of Vista."
It's a tough comment from a company that is far behind Microsoft in the operating system market. But it's also an indicative comment. Apple is firmly focused on beating Microsoft in the operating system space. It wants the world to know that Snow Leopard is ready to take on Windows 7. And most importantly, it wants the world to know that it can compete on any level with Microsoft's latest OS.

But is that really true? Apple's Snow Leopard might be just fine for consumers, but to say it will be ideal for the enterprise is a different story. In that space, it's Windows 7 that wins out.
New features
Mac OS X Snow Leopard does have a variety of new features. Finder has been reworked. It now finds and previews documents quicker than it did in previous versions of the tool. And its search tool makes it easier to perform a customized search to find files.
Windows 7 has a similar feature. Although it wasn't reworked all that much, finding files in the OS is made simple with the operating system's search and menu system that's quite similar to Windows Vista. It makes finding files quite easy.
A major update to Mac OS X is the use of Expose in the Dock. According to Apple, users will be able to add icons to the Dock and view all the active instances of that application currently running. It will show full previews just like it does in the current version of Expose.
Windows 7 might have it beat. Microsoft's latest OS has a reworked taskbar, similar to the Dock, that lets users view all the open instances of an application. They can sift through them one-by-one and then pick the window they want to open in full size. It's quite similar to Snow Leopard's preview function, but I don't see how Apple's can be any better than Microsoft's -- it's that good.
Apple has finally built Exchange support into its operating system. According to the company, support will be available in Mail, Calendar and Address Book. Users can also search for Exchange messages using Mac OS X's Spotlight search.
Microsoft has supported Exchange in its operating systems since the beginning. That doesn't necessarily mean that Windows' implementation of Exchange support will be better, but considering Microsoft has been at it much longer, you can bet it'll work quite well in Windows 7. Apple's decision to add Exchange support is a long time coming. But it doesn't provide a unique value to the enterprise.
Apple also announced that Snow Leopard will support 64-bit applications. All the apps built into the operating system are optimized for 64-bit chips and should run faster than previous versions on Leopard.
Once again, Apple hasn't shocked the world with the 64-bit announcement. That's been around for decades. Microsoft first started supporting it with Windows XP. And so far, few developers have created applications that capture the power of 64-bit architecture. The OS might be faster, but when it comes to performing daily duties, it probably won't provide much value.
But where Apple might hold a significant lead is on Snow Leopard's price. When the operating system is made available in September, current Leopard users will be able to upgrade for $29. A family five-pack of licenses will be made available for $49.

Microsoft can't match that pricing. The software giant is planning on releasing a variety of versions of Windows that will undoubtedly be priced higher than Snow Leopard. There's even some speculation that a Windows 7 upgrade license will cost more than that five-pack of Snow Leopard licenses. For the enterprise, that might be an issue. Paying less is always preferred and given Snow Leopard will be so much cheaper, it might be more attractive to the business world than ever before.
It's about the software
But in the end, we can't judge these two operating systems on a couple of features. The enterprise cares most about software. Which operating system will provide the most support for mission-critical applications?
That answer is, unequivocally, Windows 7. Along with the fact that more software is developed to work with Windows, we can't forget that XP Mode will come bundled in the professional editions of Windows 7. That means any app that works with Windows XP will work with Windows 7. It also means companies won't have to worry about application compatibility like they will with Snow Leopard.
Apple might have done a good job updating its operating system, but it's still a victim of snubbing enterprise developers. And even with Exchange support included, it seems Snow Leopard is still designed specifically for home users instead of the enterprise.
It becomes more simpler with apple's SNOW LEOPARD.

How to install Google Analytics on your blogger
Google Analytics is a great tool that will show you all sorts of useful information about how people found your blog, keywords they searched on to find you, where they came from and even how long they stayed. You’ll learn more about where your visitors come from and how they interact with your blog. This is a must tool if you are trying to build a profitable blog otherwise you are flying blind!
This article will show you how to add Google Analytics to your Blogger blog. It’s a fairly simple process and doesn’t require any technical skill at all.
Step #1 - Setup a Google Analytics Account
Go to Google Analytics and sign in using your Blogger login. If your account doesn’t work for some reason, you can create a new one instead. Once you login you’ll see a screen that looks like this:
Click on the “Sign Up >>” button and proceed to the next step which will ask you for your general information. Website URL, Account Name, Country, and Time Zone. The screen will look like this:
If you noticed, I just put my Blogger url (without the http://) and called it “David’s Account” because this is your top-level container for 1 or 100 different websites so it’s a good idea to name it something more general. The next step will ask you for your contact information which includes your first name, last name, phone number, and country. Easy so far right?
Your last step in signing up will ask you to accept the user agreement terms and conditions which you should read (just kidding…who actually ever reads these entire legal terms anyhow?).
Now this next screen is very important. This is the code you will need to copy and paste into your blogger template. Go ahead and click into the box and it will automatically highlight the entire block of code for you. Now you need to copy that code and paste it into notepad or into a MS Word document. Save it as you’ll need to use it later.
After you click on the “continue >>” button you will be taken to your brand new Google Analytics dashboard! You will see your blogger blog listed but with no analytical data….yet.
Ok, now you are done with setting up your Google Analytics account. The next step is placing the tracking code into your Blogger template so it can report back to Google Analytics and provide you with some cool data points.
Step #2 - Adding GA Tracking Code to Your Blogger Template
This is not a very difficult step even if you are afraid to touch your template code. Login to your Blogger account and then click on the “Layout” => “Edit HTML” tabs. This will bring you to the template code. Before you make any changes, I advice you to back up your template just in case there are any problems. After you’ve done so, continue reading.
Now in the edit template html code window, scroll all the way to the bottom of your template code and look for the tag. There should only be one of these closing tags in your template. If you can’t find it then your template wasn’t properly created and you should add one right above the tag.The tag should always be your last line of code in your template. It signifies the end of your template.
Ok, now go back to the code you saved before in a Word Doc from Google Analytics. You are going to copy it and paste it right above the tag as illustrated in the image below. The yellow highlighted code is the new GA code I just pasted into my template.
Save your template and you shouldn’t get any error messages. If you do, it’s most likely not related to this GA code and something else with your template itself. Assuming you’ve been successful with your save, you are all done embedding the GA code in your template!
Step #3 - Confirm Google Analytics is Tracking
Go back into your Google Analytics account and look at your dashboard. Most likely you will see a little yellow exclamation mark under the “status” column that looks like this: . This means everything isn’t working properly yet which is fine because we are about to tell GA we just added the code. From your dashboard, click on the “edit” link which is located to the far right.
After you click on that link, you’ll see another screen like below. It will say “Tracking Not Installed” followed by a link “Check Status”. You’ll want to go ahead and click on that link which will tell GA to visit your site and look for the new code you just pasted in your template.
Assuming you pasted the code in there as instructed above, GA will find the new code and begin tracking everything on your blog. If you are still having problems, it’s most likely something to do with GA and you should read their help guide to troubleshoot your problem.
The message seen here, “Waiting for Data” means you have correctly setup GA and data is being gathered! Click on the top left Google Analytics logo and it will take you back to your dashboard. From there click on the “View report” link and that’s where all your very important Blogger visitor data will start appearing!
Now it usually takes an hour or so before you will see any data (maybe longer if you don’t get much traffic to your blog) so please be patient. Trust me, you’ll be logging in at least once a day just to see how much traffic your blog is getting. It’s very addicting and powerful information to learn from. You’ll be surprised which posts are your most popular and what countries people are coming from to read your blog.
Google Analytics is very powerful and we have just learned how to install it into your Blogger template. We haven’t even scratched the surface on the features and reporting it can do. For most Bloggers, this will be enough. Data will be collected and you will just review it. Others with more in-depth goals (like selling products or services, creating a sales funnel, etc) will want to spend more time learning GA.
